Very nice Todd, what kind of wood do you paint on?

Hi Wodjo, tahnks. This was done on a masonite panel (which is also called hardboard by some providers). I lay on about 6 to 8 layers of gesso sanding between some layers. Makes a nice surface to paint on. I do seal the back with a coat of gesso as well.

Todd,
This painting is beautiful. You've captured the atmospheric elements of the mist beautifully.

I also paint on masonite every now and then and sand between layers of gesso. However, I brush the sand off before applying a new layer of gesso. Are you saying that you leave the sand on there? Maybe that would help make the surface less slippery?

Thanks paintdancer,

I wipe the dust off with a damp rag before I gesso another layer. I use a paint roller to apply the gesso so it leaves a really nice texture. I sand the texture lightly because I want just the right amount so it's not a slippery surface but just perfect for my taste...I think the amount of texture on the surface is a very personal thing. Trial and error are necessary to find what works for you.

Very nice...it goes along nicely with the Canoe. Are you starting a new theme family with these two?

Beautiful Todd, and so peaceful to look at. It feels like a healing painting too, to watch the person head forward into the mist feels like it's my journey too.

Thanks Jeff. Not exactly a new theme, I was definitely in a lake state of mind though..so maybe it is a short lived theme. I'm currently working on a figure piece and going in a different direction. I like to bounce around when I can to keep it interesting for me.

Thanks Mona..thats a very intuitive comment, I feel like I've been healing most of this year...definitely when I was painting this. This is a different kind of composition for me..sort of other-wordly in a way. A very fun departure non the less.

Todd, what an interesting painting - very different than what I think of with the kind of work you do! I really like the effect you got ... and such an interesting monochromatic approach!! :)
